NV5/Dade Moeller* played an important role in the 49th Midyear Meeting of the Health Physics Society, held at the Renaissance Austin Hotel in Texas from January 31 – February 3. William E. Kennedy, Jr., provided a plenary address on the issue of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) as related to the oil and gas industry, and Matt Moeller chaired the Contemporary Topics session, including presenting two papers of his own. As is customary, the company welcomed visiting and conversation with fellow health physicists at its space in the event’s exhibit hall.
Kennedy’s plenary address, “TENORM in the Petroleum Industry” related to technologically-enhanced naturally-occurring radioactive material, which is present in oil and gas fields and currently is regulated only in a handful of states. Kennedy co-chairs a new National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements scientific committee that is developing recommendations for TENORM waste management. His plenary address covered this important topic and encouraged participation in the council’s “TENORM in Unconventional Oil and Gas Production” workshop, which took place in conjunction with the Health Physics Society meeting on February 1–2.
