NV5 - NOAA Fukushima Response

NOAA Fukushima Response

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in Japan (2011), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) relied on NV5 to develop a comprehensive radiation protection plan to ensure the protection of crew members and scientists aboard NOAA research vessels operating in the Pacific Ocean.

As part of this work, we prepared a risk assessment based upon known and anticipated radiological conditions and prepared a scenario-based plan for when and how the crew would take protective action, if needed, while at sea. Furthermore, we provided recommendations for radiation monitoring equipment and procedures, as well as counsel on how to safety store, decontaminate, and dispose of any contaminated equipment at sea or in port, in compliance with regulations. We also developed an onboard reference flyer about potential risks for mission personnel.
