Many veterinary facilities treat hyperthyroidism in cats using radioactive iodine (I-131). Radioactive iodine is regulated as a radioactive material by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Agreement State agencies, so these veterinary facilities are required to apply for and properly maintain an NRC or Agreement State license to possess and use I-131.
For Virginia Veterinary Centers, NV5 wrote the company’s initial license application and has provided their radiation safety support for more than 15 years. For example, we provide radiation safety training for the veterinary staff and conduct annual audits of their Richmond veterinary hospital’s radiation safety program to ensure regulatory compliance.
NV5 also has supported veterinary facilities in Michigan and Ohio.
