Filled with rich history and tradition, Agganis Arena is the proud home the Boston University (BU) Terriers men’s ice hockey team. NV5 was contracted as an Owner’s Representative to provide a peer review of drawings and specifications for a renovation and upgrade to the original scoreboard/videoboard. Consistent with the expectations of a top-tier division-one athletic program, renovations to the scoreboard needed to be first class and state-of-the-art.
After completing the review and verifying the university’s contract with the vendor, we reviewed the installation of the scoreboard/videoboard system. The four-sided, center-hung, 10mm (pixel pitch), LED video displays eliminate the rafters, serving as a centerpiece of every fan’s experience in the rink. Utilizing the latest in Surface Mounted Diode (SMD) technology, each 8’ x 14’ LED video display is combined with a secondary 5’ x14’ display used for scoring and sponsorship advertisements. There are also four rotating dual-advertisement slates located at the top of each display. The scoreboard provides the BU faithful superior high resolution integrated video, audio, and live scoring capability. This top-notch quality ensures that every seat is the “best seat in the house.” Additionally, the system is a popular source of entertainment during intermissions and breaks in play. The scoreboard has become a staple of pre-game festivities, used extensively to pump up the crowd when the Terriers take the ice and also during the playing of the National Anthem. In-game graphics, instant replay, and video animation nicely complement on-ice action.
The multi-purpose indoor facility expands to 8,000 seats for concerts and BU basketball games. It periodically hosts trade shows, open floor conventions, and various on-campus events. Upgrades to the building’s audiovisual technology will be a major reason the university is able to secure more diverse events for the arena’s schedule in the future. New screens make Agganis an attractive venue for athletes, performers, and fans alike.
