The NC State University Centennial Campus Central Utility Plant Cogeneration Facility and Building Addition project generally consisted of new construction to provide energy and steam for the burgeoning Centennial Campus. The new facility will use natural gas for fueling the creation of 6.5 MW of energy and the associated steam benefit. NV5’s involvement in this project included geotechnical engineering and construction testing services. The majority of our testing services were related to the foundation support systems for the project, as well as extensive concrete quality control testing and soil density tests on fill soils. Structural steel testing services were performed for the building addition, including verification of bolted and welded connections. Verification of the adequacy of pipe welds, including radiographic examination, was an important part of this project due to the extensive high-pressure piping systems required as part of the construction.
