Oilfield NORM

When the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) raised questions about the possible presence of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) at an oil field in the Bakersfield area, Ahtna Facility Services sought the support of NV5.

Specifically, NV5 evaluated reports containing NORM survey results for human health risk posed by radiation from NORM. We prepared a letter report summarizing the NORM evaluations for submittal to the U.S. Department of Energy and the California DTSC. We also participated in meetings with the company to discuss project findings and progress, and we prepared a standard operating procedure for collecting NORM measurements for use during environmental sample collection activities.

The NV5 client point of contact remarked that our letter report was “great” and thanked us for our “valuable information regarding screening for NORM.”
