UMass Amherst Skinner Hall School of Nursing

NV5 served as project manager throughout all planning, design, and construction activities for the new home for the University’s School of Nursing. The project gutted an existing classical building, restored its shell, and re-structured it to meet current seismic requirements.

This project provided completely new building systems (i.e., mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection) for compliance with current codes. The antiquated 1940’s-era academic building was transformed into a state-of-the-art 50,000 square foot facility through strategic renovation and the addition of a new 3-story wing. The enlarged structure will house flexible classrooms, seminar rooms, offices, computer laboratories, and clinical teaching spaces — all fully equipped to support teaching with the most up-to-date hospital technologies, medical simulation equipment, and audio/visual systems.

The facility is an architectural showpiece, featuring a new enclosed courtyard, a unique exterior pedestrian bridge and significant landscape improvements.
