An NV5 certified health physicist served as the chief radiological expert for a commercial client planning a 1,600-acre residential housing complex in California. The complex would be located adjacent to a radiologically-contaminated U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) field laboratory.
Specifically, we evaluated the possible presence of radionuclides in surface soil and the potential radiation risk to members of the public. We also performed many aspects of a historical site assessment by reviewing and evaluating soil sampling studies and surveys that had already been done. We then prepared two Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM)-based sampling plans to collect samples to evaluate the presence of radionuclides in surface soil. We prepared reports to document the sampling results. Throughout the project, we interfaced with the client, the client’s attorneys, and members from two state agencies.
