The University of North Carolina (UNC) School of the Arts Film Production Design Facility provides shops, studios, and labs for programs to train young artists for professional careers in the film industry. The new, $7.9-million, 30,000-SF facility houses the Art Direction and Animation Departments, achieving one of the University’s goals to showcase work taking place within the Film School, not just the final product.
The building features composite structural steel floor framing with open-web steel joist and a metal deck roof. The facility houses office space, educational and classroom spaces, computer laboratory, film design, and construction space. The lateral force resisting system consists of braced frames.
In addition, as part of the Advanced Planning Phase, NV5 conducted utility capacity analysis (including water, fire lines, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and natural gas) and made recommendations for any required off-site utility improvements.
