Phase 1 of the Contra Costa County Vasco Road Safety Improvements Project was recently awarded the Transportation Project of the Year for 2012 by Northern California American Public Works Association. Vasco Road is a major rural arterial extending from the SR 4 Bypass south of Brentwood, Contra Costa County, to Interstate 580 in Livermore, Alameda County.
NV5 designed a solution to improve the safety of approximately 1 mile of Vasco Road between the cities of Brentwood and Livermore. This stretch of twisting Vasco Road has heavy, fast moving traffic and a history of serious injury accidents. The project consisted of installing a median barrier along the 1 mile project limits and widening the southbound pavement to provide a truck passing lane, along Vasco Road. Large soil nail and soldier pile retaining walls, pavement widening storm drains, wildlife crossings, and bridge widening were constructed to accommodate these safety improvements.
