NV5 provided design recommendations for the replacement of this bridge over Jackson Creek. Approximately 10 feet of rock core was collected from each proposed abutment location in order to determine the best design approach for earthwork and structural improvements. The investigation was performed following the guidelines and reporting requirements of Caltrans’ Foundation Report Preparation for Bridges.
Challenges encountered during this project included limited working space and resistant rock during drilling.
Our design recommendations covered parameters for foundation types and embedment depths, allowable soil bearing capacity, foundation soil friction coefficients, retaining wall lateral earth pressure coefficients, and seismic design parameters. The new bridge abutments will consist of spread footings founded on competent native rock.
