NV5 - Route 35 Restoration After Superstorm Sandy

Route 35 Restoration

In response to extensive damage caused by Superstorm Sandy, the New Jersey Department of Transportation contracted with NV5 to prepare final design documents for reconstruction of Route 35 from MP 4.0 to MP 9.0 in the New Jersey shore communities of Lavallette, Mantoloking, Toms River, and Brick.

To support state and community needs and commitments, NV5 accelerated design development to provide bid-ready contract documents — including the preparation of more than 630 plans sheets in 4 months — allowing for early advertisement/award.

This project involved full-depth pavement replacement, drainage outfalls, and check valves to prevent tidal or storm surge backflow, utility relocation/ adjustments, shoreline stabilization, pedestrian improvements, and Complete Streets features, such as sidewalks, enhanced crosswalks, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps.

Detailed services included survey and mapping, geotechnical, highway and structural design, coastal environmental permitting, mitigation design, landscape design, drainage design, ROW plans, traffic signal and electrical plans, maintenance and protection of traffic plans, utility design and coordination, and construction cost estimates.
