Accessibility Upgrades at FDR Four Freedoms State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation tasked NV5 with the implementation of accessibility upgrades at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, the first memorial dedicated to the former president in his home state. Located on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City, it is the last work of the late Louis I. Kahn, a leading architect of the 20th century.

Work included excavation of pavements around the existing Linden tree allées to provide a new permeable ADA-compliant surface with subsurface drainage and a new wheelchair lift to allow direct access via the grand stairway to the garden level.

NV5 provided design services including landscape architecture, civil, structural, electrical engineering, and arboricultural services to thoughtfully integrate these improvements into the iconic Louis Khan design.
