NV5 and Westcon Construction (Westcon) negotiated with the City of Folsom on design and construction strategies for the proposed Johnny Cash Pedestrian Bridge over Folsom Lake Crossing.
The originally approved design called for concrete abutments. NV5 and Westcon recommended an alternative, more economical design using mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) foundation abutments, based on the successful experience with two recently completed pedestrian bridges at Hidden Falls Regional Park in Auburn, California. NV5’s experience with UltraBlock® and geogrid reinforcement demonstrated that the wall components could be placed more efficiently, use less concrete, and be more architecturally appealing.
With the City of Folsom’s approval, NV5 provided design of the MSE bridge abutments, recommendations for drilling and dowelling into rock, and consultation during construction.
